DESCRIPTION:Come to the Ulysses Philomathic Library in Trumansburg NY on Tuesday Aug 6th at 6:30pm to view the Prisoner Express Art Exhibit on display. Show comes down on Aug.7 and will travel to the Newfield Public Library. \nTreacy Zeigler\, curator of the show and Art Director of Prisoner Express will be present to talk about the art and the artists. We will also have a time set aside for visitors to write a note to the prisoners about their art. We will collect the comments and mail them to the chosen artist. \nKnowing people are viewing their art encourages prisoners to keep creating. Come on Tuesday to learn more about the art as well as other programs Prisoner Express is offering thousands of incarcerated men and women across the USA.

SUMMARY:Art from Behind Bars\, the 2019 Prisoner Express Art Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Prisoner Express presents Art from Behind Bars\, a showcase featuring the work of incarcerated individuals. The show at the Big Red Barn launches a traveling exhibition that will be presented over the next year at different venues throughout the Finger Lakes region. This provides an opportunity for the larger community beyond Cornell to see the artwork of prisoners. \n \nPrisoner Express Art Exhibit Opening\nWednesday\, April 17 6:30-8:30 pm\nRefreshments and Unique Art at the Big Red Barn \nThe annual prisoner art exhibition at the Big Red Barn sponsored by the Prisoner Express of Durland Alternatives Library will be held from  April 17 through May 5. The art is representative of prisoners who participate in PE’s distance learning program which provides academic and creative projects to 4500 prisoners throughout the United States. \nSend letters to incarcerated artists\nWe are inviting the community to join us for a reception of the exhibition and to participate in writing letters to artists whose work is on display. Paper and envelopes will be provided and we will mail the letters to the prison artists. SUMMARY:Journaling for Prisoner Express
DESCRIPTION:Prisoner Express runs a Journaling Project in which inmates regularly send in reflections on their life and prison experience. It gives them a chance to reflect as well as the public to understand more clearly the life of a prisoner and the situation they face. APO volunteers read and respond to prisoner journal entries every Wednesday evening\, and anyone can participate in this program on Saturdays anytime from 1-3 PM– just stop by the library and ask about the Journal Program!

SUMMARY:Annual Prison Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Big Red Barn\, Cornell University\, April 11\, 2018 \n7-9 pm opening reception \nArt is  a tool of expression that allows us to capture snapshots of our individual human experiences. For some\, art is their only way of telling the world who they are and may go unnoticed within the confines of life incarcerated. This art show serves to bring light to those misrepresented voices who desire to have their experiences told through their artwork. \nArt Exhibition:\nOn April 11th at the Big Red Barn\, join us for an insightful art show highlighting work from artists in prisons throughout the United States.  \nSome artists are long-time participants of Prisoner Express; artists like Steve Fegan a prisoner in the California Department of Corrections. \nAnother long-time artist is Julie Spencer\, also of California who has been generous in contributing her artwork both for this exhibition but many in the past. The exhibition presents approximately 30 works of art developed over the past year from various artists in prisons through-out the United States. \nIn this time\, when the “other” is under attack\, the rights of the prisoner will most certainly be challenged and the freedom for creative expression may become limited. It is at these times\, when programs like Prisoner Express are pertinent to protect these rights of the prisoner. \nEveryone Welcome:\nEnjoy some light refreshments while taking in the insightful and diverse array of artwork from prisoners across the United States. SUMMARY:Art Show : Prisoner Expresso –  Coffee anyone?
DESCRIPTION:Like the rest of us\, many prisoners start their days with a cup of coffee. Some get in it at morning chow; some make it in their cells (if they are in those prisons allowing small coffee makers in cells). Perhaps what is unique to prisoners is that some of the prisoners save part of their coffee to use in creating art. \nIn prisons where there is limited materials with which to work as an artist\, prisoners learn how to adapt everyday things into art mediums. Prisoner Express has been receiving these works of arts for several years. Most consistently\, PE receives art where coffee is used as a “wash” of color\, substituting coffee for watercolor or ink. In some prisons where the prisoners construct jewelry boxes and other things out of popsicle sticks\, coffee is used as a stain for the wood. \nPrisoner Express has partnered with Gimme Coffee to present this coffee art. \nAsking PE’s membership of 3500 prisoners throughout the United States representing every state\, and about 600 prisons\, prisoners have been submitting artwork for this exhibition. \nIn the month of January 2018\, this artwork will be exhibited at Gimme Coffee at Cayuga Street\, Ithaca. Later in March\, the work with additional pieces will be exhibited at Gimme Coffee in Trumansburg. \nPlease take the opportunity to view this artwork brought to you from prison chow-halls and cells from across the United States.
