SUMMARY:Art from Behind Bars\, the 2019 Prisoner Express Art Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Prisoner Express presents Art from Behind Bars\, a showcase featuring the work of incarcerated individuals. The show at the Big Red Barn launches a traveling exhibition that will be presented over the next year at different venues throughout the Finger Lakes region. This provides an opportunity for the larger community beyond Cornell to see the artwork of prisoners. \n \nPrisoner Express Art Exhibit Opening\nWednesday\, April 17 6:30-8:30 pm\nRefreshments and Unique Art at the Big Red Barn \nThe annual prisoner art exhibition at the Big Red Barn sponsored by the Prisoner Express of Durland Alternatives Library will be held from  April 17 through May 5. The art is representative of prisoners who participate in PE’s distance learning program which provides academic and creative projects to 4500 prisoners throughout the United States. \nSend letters to incarcerated artists\nWe are inviting the community to join us for a reception of the exhibition and to participate in writing letters to artists whose work is on display. Paper and envelopes will be provided and we will mail the letters to the prison artists. First names are used and the return address is Durland Alternatives Library.  The human need for acknowledgment is often denied to prisoners and your comments and your letters provide meaningful support. \n  “ Prisoner Express was a window in my cell that allowed me to see the world outside of prison.  Through that window\, P.E. invited me to write stories and essays about things that mattered to me.  Writing all those stories and essays helped me to examine the way I think and feel – and that really changed my life for the better.  You see\, P.E. allowed me to advance my communication skills and that alone is the greatest thing that will help you transition from the inside to the outside.” \n~ Dave Gordon recently released long time PE member \nFor more information email prisonerexpress@gmail.com or call the Alternatives Library at 255-6486. \nPlease join us on April 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 for viewing the art and the opportunity to write letters of encouragement to the prison artists! \nPrisoner Express Art Exhibit Opening\nWednesday\, April 17 6:30-8:30 pm\nRefreshments and Unique Art at the Big Red Barn

SUMMARY:The Alternatives Library Triennial Book Sale!
DESCRIPTION:This is our biggest\, and most extensive book sale ever – and it’s only happening for one day. \nIt’s been 3 years since we had a book sale\, and throughout this time we’ve consistently set aside books for a sale – it’s our way of saying “we think our friends would like this”. \nWhat will you find at the book sale?\n\nAll the DVDs we cleaned out when we reduced our collection by 70%\nAll of our books on CD and books on Tape (yes… cassettes for your roadtrip)\nHundreds of CDs\, we once had an extensive music collection\nThousands of books. These are duplicates that were donated\, things that didn’t fit in our collection\, and things we set aside that we thought you’d like.\n\n*The proceeds from our book sale will benefit Prisoner Express\, our program that corresponds with\, and provides materials for prisoners. \n**The sale is wheel chair accessible\, and there will be free parking (because it’s a Saturday) is available in the lot behind our building. \n\nFor more information\, contact us alt-lib@cornell.edu or call 607-255-6486 \nDonate your books! Have some favorites you’d like to share? What about those boxes of unused books sitting in storage? Well\, the Alternatives Library is accepting book donations. \nBooks can be brought to the library or a pickup can be arranged.
