Advisory Board

The Durland Alternatives Library has an advisory board which oversees the direction and activities of the organization and its projects (like Prisoner Express). The advisory board consists of community members–all of whom are committed to supporting the library and its mission.

We do things like...

  • Create the yearly budget and decide how to spend our funding
  • Advocate for the organization and raise money to support our mission
  • Organize events such as the library book sale, outreach, forums, and conferences
  • Connect with other community organizations for collaboration

We host regular meetings at the library

Every first Wednesday of the month (unless otherwise posted) is an advisory board meeting. These meetings are a chance to get involved, and also to work on the library collection itself.

Here’s some of what you can expect from our advisory board meetings:

  • Review a different section of the library each month to remove and identify new books
  • Review and get a status update on each of the library programs (including Prisoner Express)
  • Learn about ways the library is involved in community projects
  • Learn how to get involved in Prisoner Express programs

Enhancing the Collection

At each meeting we will review a section of the library for items we can pull, and brainstorm, search, and possibly even order on the spot items that we can add. This is an exciting, action oriented meeting that also contributes immensely to quality of the library’s collection.

Expectations

Members of the advisory board are expected to be a regular participant in the library or one of its programs so that they can be involved and have perspective on our day to day operations.

Advisory board member terms are renewed every 2 years, and the minimum commitment is a 2 year commitment.

While there are monthly meetings, only 4 of those meetings are decision making meetings which are mandatory to attend, preferably in person but other ways of participating are available for those meetings.
